Determination of Critical Cooling Rate for Hardening Aluminum Alloys using HyperDSC
نویسنده
چکیده
When an aluminum alloy is solution annealed and afterwards cooled too slowly, an exothermal precipitation reaction occurs. With increasing cooling rate, the precipitation heat decreases. Since the precipitation reaction is relatively fast, a fast cooling rate on the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) is essential to obtain the critical cooling rate which is the minimum cooling rate at which no precipitation heat is detectable. In this case, it was determined to be 375 (±10) K/min. Such a fast cooling rate can be realized through PerkinElmer’s HyperDSC technology. In cast aluminum and its alloys, the microstructure varies under different solidification conditions, causing variations in their mechanical properties. These materials are basically produced in sand and metallic molds or through die casting, each of which is associated with a unique solidification regime with significantly different cooling rates so that the resulting microstructure strongly d...

Cast aluminum alloys are usually subject to solution treatment, quenching, and aging hardening for improved mechanical properties. Cooling rate during quenching plays an important role in residual stress, distortion, and mechanical property distributions in the resultant cast aluminum components. As the cooling rates of work pieces heavily depend on the interfacial heat transfer coefficient (HT...

Time-temperature-precipitation (TTP) diagrams deliver important material data, such as temperature and time ranges critical for precipitation during the quenching step of the age hardening procedure. Although the quenching step is continuous, isothermal TTP diagrams are often applied. Together with a so-called Quench Factor Analysis, they can be used to describe very different cooling paths. Ty...

In the present chapter, results of our recent investigations on the role of gallium (Ga) on the aluminum (Al) site in Zr69.5Al7.5-xGaxCu12Ni11 metallic glass (MG) composition have been discussed. The material tailoring and cooling rate effects on the mechanical behavior of Zr-based metallic glasses and their nanocomposites have been studied. The substitution of Ga on the Al site in Zr–Al–Cu–Ni ...

The main task of this work was to study the influence of the cooling conditions after homogenization of the 6082 aluminium alloys. The effect of the solution heat treatment temperature on the mechanism and ageing kinetics of the two commercial wrought aluminum alloys 6005 and 6082 was also analyzed. The alloys were heat treated—T4 with a wide range of solution heat treatment temperature from 51...
